Ever wondered what to do in the event of a blocked drain?  This is your go to guide for quick and efficient unblocking of your blocked drain.

Quick Guide

  1. Grab a plunger, yes, a plunger, the one with the handle and round at the bottom, no not the coffee plunger, the one in the bathroom, if your coffee plunger is there, we have some questions, like minded individual. We made a link so that it is clear what plunger you need.
  2. Now the next step is very important, it find the blocked drain, basin, bath, sink, shower or toilet does not matter.
  3. Make sure that you cover the waste fitting completely with the plunger, yes, the hole where the water drains out
  4. The next part is the best part. Pump It Pump it, louder, pump it, louder…..
  5. Sweet victory or defeat! Either way you tried it, if it failed call Tap Tap Plumbing, we heard they will sort it the same day, neat!

I do not think a detailed guide will be needed as the task itself is quite simple and easy enough, from here on out I thought we will cover what causes blockages, in the future there will be a blog post about the effectiveness off drain cleaners which we recommend and why. Let us start with kitchen blockages, now items normally in a kitchen or a scullery such as a dishwasher, prep bowl, wash through or sink can be blocked most commonly by food. However, we found the ones most common to be blocked by food is a blocked prep bowl and a blocked sink, it makes sense right as it is where most people rinse their plates or vegetables or food. When the other items are blocked by food it is normally because the waste pipes are connected, and some food waste found its way down the waste line and decided to move in. Blocked dishwashers and wash throughs are more commonly caused by sludge build up, due to the regular use of washing powders or washing blocks that causes some sort of sludge in the pipe. Blocked washing machines are caused most commonly by fabrics or sludge and hairpins, believe it or not. Now this is just some off the most common ones, there is a vast number of other things that can block drains.

Let us make our way down to the bathroom, now if you google blocked bathroom, well then, I think we might be the only result, lol. Might say the same for blocked loo. Well on the blocked toilet subject, there is a lot that can cause the blockages, a blockage can be caused by a foreign object that has been flushed, deliberately or by accident, we do not judge or ask questions we just unblock blocked and clogged drains. Excessive paper use can also lead to blockages, usage of wet wipes, yes even toilet friendly ones. Now that contradicts what the packaging says, it is safe for toilet use, now trust me I am a professional, it is not safe, if you want to use them, use them but dispose of them in a bin, like those nappy bins, they are great for those smelly items. Next tree roots cause blocked drains, so if you need tree roots to be removed from your drain, we have very special equipment for that, roots do not stand a chance with us. But yes, once in the sewer it is a mess and does cause chronic blockages, but look at you, you have a great plumber on speed dial! Structural problems, like installation faults or shifting in ground can also cause blockages of your main sewer line.

Blocked basins are most commonly caused by hair, yes men, from your beard and elsewhere. Secondly, they can be caused by sludge build up also, due to the chemicals in hand soaps, toothpaste and so forth as well as oil and dirt and grime on our hands. Blocked showers are caused by mainly and almost always hair, ladies, this one is all you, we love those long hairs but Joh the bill! Sludge is also a cause from chemicals and those oils that once more the ladies love to put in their hair. Blocked baths follow the same path as blocked showers, not much different there. Blocked bidets, what is a bidet, google, anyways they follow a similar path to that of blocked urinals, it is mostly urine that crystalize in the trap that causes that blockage, yes, it is a very unpleasant blockage to clear, however we are fully geared for it.

Now that is my story for blocked drains at tis stage, next time we will cover drain cleaners and how they work, how to use them, which ones we recommend and why. Also, we will be doing one on different methods of drain cleaning, so the avid readers can be engaged, the watchers, there will be a video also.

Also, no, there is no pictures for this one. You do not want to see that, trust us, we would rather not spoil your appetite. Too see other resources on sludge click here.
