Step 1: Locate and Shut Off the Isolating Valve
The isolating valve is also called a stop tap or stop valve, it completely isolates the water supply from that point onward. In South African homes, it’s usually on the cold water pipe entering the geyser. If water is leaking through your ceiling, closing this valve stops new water from entering the geyser, limiting the damage and reducing wastage. Even if the leak isn’t visible yet, shut it off anyway, there’s no point letting your geyser continue draining while you wait for help. Note: Older taps may require some force to turn. Apply light, steady pressure, you don’t want to break the tap and make a bad situation worse.Step 2: Open a Warm Water Tap to Release Pressure
A geyser is a pressurised system. If you don’t release that pressure, water will keep forcing its way out through the burst point, worsening the leak and ceiling damage. Open a warm water tap, preferably the lowest one in the house, to relieve the pressure. Don’t worry about draining the geyser completely; an anti-syphon loop was installed during installation to prevent that. Water and electricity don’t mix. A geyser leak near an electrical connection can trip your entire house or cause an electrical fire. Find the geyser circuit breaker on your DB board, it’s usually labelled and sits next to the stove breaker. Flip it down so it points in the opposite direction to the other breakers. Even with the breaker off, do not touch any exposed wiring or attempt electrical repairs. Leave that to the professionals.Step 4: Place a Bucket Under the Leak
If the geyser is in the roof and water is leaking through the ceiling, put a bucket underneath. If water is spreading across multiple spots, poke a small hole at a low point in the ceiling to channel the water into one area. This prevents it from soaking the insulation and spreading wider. Reuse the water, don’t waste it. Use it on your garden or for outdoor cleaning. Every litre counts.
