Emergency Plumbing Tips

Plumbing emergencies can happen at any moment, causing stress and potential damage. Knowing what steps to take can save you time, money, and hassle. Here are some immediate actions homeowners can take during plumbing emergencies while they wait for plumbers to come to repair the emergency:

1. Shut Off the Water at the stop tap or stop valve
If you encounter a major leak or a burst pipe and or burst geyser, the first step is to turn off the water supply to your home. Locate your main water shut-off valve, usually found where the water pipe enters the house or near the water heater/geyser or close to the property boundary wall under the water meter cover. This will prevent further water damage while you assess the situation.

2. Drain the taps, Open cold and warm water taps
After shutting off the water supply at the stop tap, turn on all faucets/taps in your home to let any remaining water escape. This will help alleviate and reduce the pressure in the pipes and minimize flooding.

3. Use Towels and Buckets
If water is leaking onto the floor, use towels, buckets, or containers to catch as much water as possible. This can help reduce the damage to your flooring and belongings. As a bonus the water can be reused in your garden and unnecessary waste of water is limited. Hot water can be used to wash or clean thigs or can be left to cool down and then fed to plants.

4. Identify the Problem
Try to identify the source of the issue. Is it a clogged drain, a broken pipe, or a malfunctioning fixture or broken tap? This information can be valuable when contacting a professional plumber, with us at Tap Tap Plumbing, we will provide you with an estimate upon your initial call making the plumbing repairs seamless.

5. Switch off the electrical supply to the geyser or hot water heater, as a rule of thumb, whenever any water supply is switched off, it is good practice to switch off the geyser until the issue has been resolved by a professional plumber. This ensures that you extend the lifetime of your geyser element as well as prevent the element from running dry and getting dry burned which will then result in the element and or thermostat needing a replace, adding unnecessary costs to your plumbing repairs.

6.Don’t Attempt Major Plumbing Repairs
While it’s tempting to try and fix the problem yourself, avoid making any major repairs unless you are confident in your plumbing skills. Professional plumbers have the tools and expertise to handle complex issues safely and effectively.
